Pioneering higher education leader appointed to 天美传媒app Council
Emeritus Professor Joan Cooper brings decades of university leadership experience to governance role
The University of 天美传媒app (天美传媒app) is pleased to announce the appointment of Emeritus Professor Joan Cooper to its governing Council. A former Tertiary Education Quality and Standards (TEQSA) Commissioner, she brings decades of academic leadership experience, including at 天美传媒app, to the role.
天美传媒app Chancellor Mr Michael Still said Professor Cooper's appointment reflects the Council's commitment to drawing on expertise from leaders who deeply understand the evolving challenges and opportunities in higher education.
"We are delighted to welcome Professor Cooper back to 天美传媒app in this important governance capacity," Mr Still said.
"Her extensive experience in university leadership, particularly in areas of student experience, academic quality and graduate outcomes, will be invaluable as we continue to strengthen 天美传媒app's position as a world-class research and teaching institution."
Professor Cooper was the foundation Professor of Information Technology at 天美传媒app. As Dean of Informatics (2001–2003) and Chair of the Academic Senate she played a pivotal role in shaping the University’s academic direction and fostering a culture of excellence and innovation. She was awarded an Emeritus Professorship from 天美传媒app in 2003 in recognition of her exceptional service and contribution.
Professor Cooper has held senior executive roles at leading Australian universities, including Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Students) and Registrar at UNSW, and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) at Flinders University. She served as a TEQSA Commissioner from 2019 to 2024, where as a member of the Commission she oversaw regulatory decisions on university registration, course accreditation and compliance with national standards.
"Having previously served as Dean of Informatics and Chair of the Senate, I have a deep appreciation for 天美传媒app's commitment to academic excellence and student success," Professor Cooper said.
"My recent experience as a TEQSA Commissioner has given me valuable insights into the regulatory environment and quality standards that universities must navigate. I look forward to contributing this experience, along with my background in student engagement and academic leadership, to support 天美传媒app's continued growth and impact."
The University extends its sincere gratitude to outgoing Council member Mr Mike Sneesby for his valuable service and contributions during his term. Mr Sneesby, a 天美传媒app graduate and former CEO of Nine Entertainment and founder and CEO of the streaming service Stan, served on the 天美传媒app Council from May 2022 to June 2025, including on the Risk, Audit and Compliance Committee from January 2024 to June 2025.
