Overview

This one-year honours degree is for graduates of a three-year psychology degree who need a fourth year of study to apply for provisional registration as a practising psychologist and accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council.

An honours year of study also provides students with a competitive advantage when they enter the workforce.

Throughout this degree, you will undertake a research project to produce advanced written work that demonstrates your ability to analyse and synthesise information, solve complex problems, and orally present this information in various formats. You will show an advanced ability to apply research methods to address psychological questions related to behaviour and mental processes.

Accreditation & professional recognition

Completion of four years of study in Psychology is an important first step for registration as a psychologist in Australia. The Bachelor of Arts (Psychology) and Bachelor of Psychological Science are accredited by the (APAC) as the first three years of study. To complete the four year sequence, students must complete an add-on Honours year such as the Bachelor of Psychological Science (Honours) to meet the requirements for provisional registration with the Psychology Board of Australia.

Students who are enrolled in one of the accredited three year degrees and are considering the Bachelor of Psychological Science (Honours) degree are advised to check the Psychology website for information on entry requirements and the application process.

An additional two years of education and training is necessary to apply for general registration. This can be through a fifth year at University plus one year of supervised practice in the community or an approved postgraduate degree accredited at the fifth and sixth year level. Admissions information

Applicants must have completed (in the last 10 years), or be currently enrolled in the final year of, a three year APAC-accredited sequence in Psychology (or other Level 1 equivalent), with at least a credit average in 200 and 300 level Psychology subjects.

ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½app Applicants: Please provide a statement advising any unusual features of your undergraduate psychology degree structure, e.g. results from universities other than ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½app, overseas exchange programs.

Non-ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½app Applicants: If your degree was completed outside of Australia you will need to submit an APS Assessment of your qualification with your application.

  • Workload

    Full-Time Study Load

    As a full-time student, you can expect to commit around 48 hours of study per week. This includes class time and independent study. You may need to factor more time for examination study, practical work and placements.
