Overview

The Master of Psychology (Clinical) provides a comprehensive program of study focussed on the practice of clinical psychology including assessment, intervention, communication and ethics. It also provides specialised training and supervised practice in the assessment and intervention skills of clinical psychologists.

This degree is for graduates who have completed four-years of Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) accredited study, fulfilling an AQF Level 8 sequence in psychology or an international equivalent. Applicants will have demonstrated competent completion of the APAC Level 2 Pre-Professional Competencies during their psychology study. The primary aim of the Master of Psychology (Clinical) is to provide a fifth and sixth year of structured learning and supervised practice to meet the requirements for general registration as a psychologist. This will also prepare graduates for entry into a registrar program leading to an area of practice endorsement in clinical psychology, with the Psychology Board of Australia.

The degree includes subjects in clinical assessment and interventions, psychotherapy and research. Students are also required to complete a research project - facilitated by structured research subjects - in each of the two years of the program.

Teaching methods include a combination of lectures, workshops, skills training, online and supervised work-based practicums, both at the University's Northfields Psychology Clinic and at external placements.

Accreditation & professional recognition

The Master of Psychology (Clinical) is accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) as a 5th and 6th year program of study for the purpose of full registration as a psychologist with the Psychology Board of Australia, and to provide preparation for entry into a registrar program leading to an area of practice endorsement in clinical psychology with the Psychology Board of Australia. A four-year, or three-year plus a fourth-year, Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) accredited sequence in psychology within the last 10 years. Applicants must also be eligible for registration with the Psychology Board of Australia (PsyBA) as a provisional psychologist.

Compulsory Work Based Placement
This course contains a total of 1000 hours of compulsory work-based placements, completed over 104 weeks (at 10 hours per week) throughout the degree.

  • Workload

    Full-Time Study Load

    As a full-time student, you can expect to commit around 48 hours of study per week. This includes class time and independent study. You may need to factor more time for examination study and practical work & placements.

  • Credit for Prior Learning

    High performing students may apply for transfer to the Doctor of Psychology or Doctor of Philosophy (Clinical Psychology) following completion of the first year.

    If you have completed prior studies or relevant professional experience, you can request course credit or subject exemptions to reduce the duration and cost of your program.

    Credit for prior learning evaluates your previous study or work experience related to your chosen subjects.
